GROOVE Podcast 498 – Doudou MD

Whether Doudou MD had in mind that this would be this year’s first issue of our podcast series after the clock change? The set she recorded, after all, is beaming with open air spirit that perfectly matches days finally becoming longer again. A burgeoning, blossoming affair of playful house music including whistles, marimbas and ephemeral vocals—carpe diem transformed into music, so to speak.

What did you have in mind when recording this mix?

I wanted to make something nice for in the car or at the gym, feel good house with percussive elements and drive. I started with a tribal, but warm introduction as that is something that I always aim for. Then I went on mixing some new diggs, records that I have been playing out lately, combined with others that have been laying around waiting to be picked up.

Where did you record it and which setup did you use?

I recorded it at home in Amsterdam, on my setup with 2x CDJ700 and 2x MKII Technics and an Allen & Heath 23. very simple, but intentional. Recording a podcast forces you to really listen and commit to the moment.

What’s the most memorable gig you played so far?

Recently I played a 6 hour closing set for VBX at Tillatec in Amsterdam. I used to go out to dance at VBX parties all the time back in the days, and I hadn’t played for them in a little while. So it was a really nice mixture of coming home, diving into old histories while showing some new grooves altogether.

Can you name a secret weapon that you use frequently?

„Stewie“ by Luciano Esse. It’s a house track produced by a guy that mostly releases techno music. So it has this laid back house vibe, but with a techno underlayer drive—I love tracks like this.

Three recent releases that caught your attention?

I’m actually pretty bad with naming new releases as I’m mostly digging into the old, but lately I’m enjoying: „Mordisco (Sansibar Remix)“ by Secretsundaze and Lemon Juice – Ripe ’n Juicy.

What do you have coming up?

A busy period with a lot of shows, which I’m really excited about. At the same time, I’m working on my production skills with some new machines I’ve purchased as well as my botanical ritual brand Like Rose that will be released soon.
