GROOVE Podcast 494 – Sally C

For Sally C, a good House set is a straightforward affair: The Belfast-born, Berlin-based artist prefers to keep things simple yet effectful. That doesn’t mean, however, she’s not inventive behind the decks. In her contribution to our podcast series, different takes on the genre collide in an open-minded manner—thumping and effervescent, trippy but heavy-hitting, joyful yet constantly rolling. No frills, but fruitful contradictions.

What did you have in mind when recording this mix?

I recently played an extended set in L.A., it was one of my favourite times playing over there. It was one of those gigs where everything felt free and I was in the groove from start to finish. I love when there is trust built together and you can go deep and weird and dive into all corners of your music. It’s a gift when this happens and this was the intention when recording this mix. I feel like there’s always so much pressure when recording and I wanted to let myself feel free and in the groove, it’s important as you can really feel it on the other end. I dug for some classic house sounds, as always, but also wanted to show a softer, deeper, rolling side to my sound.

Where did you record it and which setup did you use?

In my cosy flat in Berlin with my setup here—2 CDJ’s & 1 Xone:96.

What’s the most memorable gig you played so far?

It’s hard to choose one but K41 closing with Cromby on New Year’s Day 2021 in Kyiv is always the place I go to in my head when asked this question. There’s really something special there, it’s one of my favourite clubs I’ve ever played. The team, crowd, space, sound, energy is all unmatched.

Can you name a secret weapon that you use frequently?

Secret’s out: Rhythm Friends – Work That Body (The House Mix). White label, not on YouTube.

Three recent releases that caught your attention?

Bertie – BDE on Correspondant is a sick release coming this month on Jen Cardini’s label; it’s giving early 2000s sexy Tech-House sounds.

Pancratio – Automatic House LP, the most recent release on Faith Beat, it’s really really great House Music. All tracks are amazing.

More great House Music on Running Hot’s label, the last two releases are so good: One from Running Hot – Bad for the Body, Good For the Soul and newest from Revivis – Chatsworth Days.

What do you have coming up?

About to go on tour in Australia which is somewhere I cherish very much. Can’t wait to be back there. In April doing a Big Saldo’s Chunkers label takeover during a 4 club North American run in New York, Chicago, Montréal and Miami, which I can’t wait for. Musicwise got an exciting release schedule on the label coming up this year, first release coming very soon from a Berlin based artist. Solo music coming too from me this year.
