GROOVE Podcast 492 – Gregor Tresher

Gregor Tresher can look back on a long and prolific career in electronic music. Since the 90’s, he has been active in various shapes, forms, and functions: As a DJ, as a label head, and as producer under numerous guises and for different colleagues. For his contribution to our podcast series, the Frankfurt born artist distills a rampant fusion of Techno and Electro, merging the musical approaches he pursues as Gregor Tresher and with his recently revived Sniper Mode moniker.

What did you have in mind when recording this mix?

My goal was to come up with a set that represents my idea of DJing and also stretches from Techno to Electro. I included my current favorite tracks from both genres and also played quite a few new tunes of mine. Towards the end, I mixed Robert Smith’s iconic vocals from The Cure’s „Disintegration”, the title song of my favourite album of all times, over my new track „Sleeping Giants”. The closing track is an unofficial remix of mine of Richard D. James’s timeless masterpiece „On”.

Where did you record it and which setup did you use?

I worked on the set in my studio in Frankfurt. I used Cubase to record it. I wanted to keep it pretty much straight forward in terms of the actual setup and not overcomplicate things.

What’s the most memorable gig you played so far?

That’s a tough question as I’ve been doing this for quite a while. I’d say it doesn’t get much better than Fusion when it comes to festival gigs. In terms of club shows, some of my most amazing memories are gigs at Berghain. Playing DJ sets there was already incredible, but my highlight was playing live. It was one of those shows where everything just fell into place—it kind of felt as if the stars aligned. I’m aware this is obviously not the most original answer to that question, but it is my honest opinion. I really enjoy playing in South America these days and also Australia never disappoints. I do believe my best gig is yet to come though—or else what would be the point to even continue? I’m not a fan of nostalgia at all.

Can you name a secret weapon that you use frequently?

Andrea Parker feat. DJ Assault & DJ Godfather – Freaky Bitches.

Three recent releases that caught your attention?

Minimum Syndicat feat. Voiron & G303 – Knowing That We Know Nothing
Petar Dundov – Alpha Prime
Orlando Voorn – Wicked System

What do you have coming up?

I just released a new 12-inch on my label Break New Soil with an original track of mine called „Sleeping Giants” on the A-Side and a remix by my good friend Enrico Sangiuliano on the flip. In March, there will be another new EP of mine on Uncage titled The High End Low, including remixes by Mathew Jonson and Marco Faraone. Also, a new collaboration by André Galluzzi and myself will be out in March on the second Cocoon 25 Years compilation. I recorded a track with Lilly Palmer that will be out on her album in March. In April, I will release a three-track EP on Sasha’s label Last Night On Earth. I also have quite a few new Electro tracks coming up under my recently revived Sniper Mode moniker plus a couple of remixes, for example a remix of Tiga & Zyntherius’s iconic „Sunglasses At Night”, which will be out in May.
