It seems as if João Maria can’t quite believe what’s been happening around him in the past five years. Whether he talks about his DJ residency at Lisbon’s Ministerium Club, their in-house record which he takes care of or LISB_ON #Jardim Sonoro, the festival he co-curates, the word he uses the most when looking back is “already” – just as if time had moved too quickly to comprehend the influence he and his own work had on the local scene. Ahead of the fifth edition of LISB_ON, he nonetheless found the time to walk us around to show us his favourite spots in Lisbon.

5. Quiosque Ribeira das Naus

This is an amazing spot in Lisbon where you can have really good cocktails and food by the river and where i do my label Assemble Music’s monthly showcases during the summer with international guests and residents. It’s already the third season and the spot is very special for me as its view is kind of magic and gives the artists and the crowd an amazing energy on each party. Besides this the entrance is free!

4. Ministerium Club

Ministerium is a my second home! I have been curating the music programme and playing there as resident DJ since day one. It’s been already five years and we booked some of the most important names in the industry and amazing upcoming talents: Moodymann, Move D, Ricardo Villalobos, Carl Craig, Zip, Russ Gabriel, Jane Fitz, Actress, Nina Kraviz, Delano Smith, Margaret Dygas, Nicolas Lutz, Baby Ford, Thomas Melchior, Voices from the Lake, DJ Deep, Aubrey, Binh, Vera, Magda, Cassy, Maayan Nidam, Jeff Mills, Dax J, Helena Hauff and so many others. The sound is very good and the DJ booth is super comfortable. We also launched Ministerium Records in 2017 and have already five releases out.

3. Parque Eduardo VII

Parque Eduardo VII is Lisbon’s central park with a wonderful view from the top. Every end of August or the beginning of September the Parque hosts the LISB_ON #Jardim Sonoro festival, the event that I run with my partners Francisco de Andrade, Filipe Calheiros, Maria Calheiros, and Nuno Horta e Costa. For three days we curate and produce a day-time festival from 2pm to 1am with two stages built on a beautiful spot in the park. It’s like a secret garden inside the park. Its already our fifth edition and the environment and energy is very unique! Parents can bring their kids for free and we secure them all the safety points in terms of production. Music wise we curate the garden with some of the best funk, jazz, disco, house and techno.

2. Slou

Slou is a Lisbon-based clothing store offering a great selection of brands and products which are usually a bit difficult to find in Portugal. The products are not cheap but there is exclusive and limited items and the quality is very high. The brand and shop was founded by André Cascais and Alex Vinent.

1. Bar do Fundo (Praia Grande)

Bar do Fundo is a really great Beach Restaurant with an incredible view over the sea in Praia Grande. After a 30-minute drive from the Lisbon airport you can find this spot with amazing food and drinks in a very relaxed environment. Manuel Cotta is the restaurant founder and he is also a music lover, so he invites DJs to play at the beach once a week every August. You can imagine how special it is to play at the beach from 6pm to 2am with a very good sound system and DJ booth. Friends, cocktails and special music, matching the paradise!
