GROOVE Podcast 484 – Clarisa Kimskii

How did summer sound to you? Mid-December might just be the right time to ask that question and to hark back to last season’s fondest festival memories. In July, for instance, Clarisa Kimskii delivered what might be just the perfect mixture of groove, drive, and introspection on a warm afternoon at Nation of Gondwana. A two and a half hours ride that forfeits none of its allure on headphones, reminiscing about longer days and moments of ethereal bliss.

What did you have in mind when recording this mix?

This is a recorded set from the second day of an outdoor festival on a hot summer afternoon, about an hour from Berlin. Nation of Gondwana has been happening since 1995. I went in with the mindset of playing in this circumstance, and a mixture of tribal, psychedelic, and groovy techno is what came out of it.

Which setup did you use?

The set up was 4 CDJ’s and a Xone 96 mixer.

What’s the most memorable gig you played so far?

There’s a few that could be mentioned but I’d have to say Honcho Campout in 2021 for several reasons. It was one of the first gatherings that was happening after things started opening up again. It was at this festival that I played out as Clarisa for the first time. Also if I had to mention one gig that set me on the path to gain further recognition and touring it would be this one. It was an amazing gathering for the queer community and I met so many amazing people that had traveled from all the US.

Can you name a secret weapon that you use frequently?

Humana-ised“ by Ignacio aka the legendary Steve Rachmad.

Three recent releases that caught your attention?

The Material Without Qualities LP by Adlas on Hayes, X2 on Fides is an excellent 6 track VA EP and Immolation on Enemy Records is a fantastic VA EP, too.

What do you have coming up?

I’m in the process of moving to Rotterdam which has been a bit daunting but really exciting as well. I’m making my Italian debut for Anarchy In the club MOAB in Milano next week and I’m playing in Barcelona on New Year’s Day and in Paris at essaim a few days later.
